MU.NU
Pixy Misa from
Ambient Irony helped me move over from
my old Blogspot blog to my new mu.nu one. I simply mentioned in a blog post that I wanted to explore other options, and abracadabra he set everything up for me and welcomed me on over. Mu.nu has been great, and it's been easier for me than Blogger (e.g. comments included, search engine for site, uploading photos, etc). So if anyone is interested in moving his blog or starting up a brand new blog, Pixy has
made an open invitation to mu.nu! There's always room for one more, and then maybe you can see
your name in lights!

THANKS
We made it to 30,000 hits folks; thanks! Of course, according to my referrals, 572 of those hits were looking for dirty photos, but oh well. Maybe one of those people tried to grok.

The post above this one put me in a 韓國的인
Hangukchogin (Korean; lit. 'Korea-ish-being') kinda mood. Now for the Japanese ...
三萬ヒット御目出度う!
san-man hitto omedetou!
three-ten-thousand hit congratulations!
Gotta love wacky Japanese rebuses - omedetou is written with:
1. 御 o- (honorific prefix; semantic)
2. 目 me 'eye' (used for its sound only)
3. 出 de 'come out' (used for its sound only)
4. 度 ta(ku) 'measure' (used for its sound only; read as do elsewhere but pronounced as to here before the next symbol)
5. う u (pure phonetic symbol).
historically omedetaku > omedetau (k-loss) > omedetou (a > o).
The honorable eye will come out to measure again when you hit 40,000!

JERK
Holy crap, I'm a jerk. I just got an email from a reader who said that my comments section thought he was spam and started swearing at him! And he's an Italian anti-idiotarian; I certainly have no intention of chasing him away! Come back, please!
So he gets his own plug here on my blog for being a good sport, reporting the error message, and saying "It is truly inspiring to read about how you cope with your husband's absence. I can only tell you that my heartfelt best wishes are with both of you. At least some of us old Europeans appreciate what you and he are doing!"
Go visit serenade...the coolest European ever.

Why are you a jerk? Sounds like MT has some rude anti-spam deterrent built in.
I know how serenade feels. One blog's software went berserk on me and told me to **** off. Worse yet, it signed that nastiness with the blogger's name without his knowledge. The program had seemingly taken on a life of its own and even started to complicate things for the blogger himself, who switched to MT in the end.

Hmm. I have the latest version of MT and as far as I know it's not cussing at people in the comments. If it does have such capability, I wonder if it's at all customizable? I'd rather write my own antispammy curses.

Um, no, that's my fault. I'm not sure exactly how Serenade got into the Blacklist, but the logs say it was me.
Apologies to Serenade and to Sarah.

Ah, Pixy - I think I know what happened, and needless to say it was my fault. I e-mailed you about it - let me know if I was right.
And Sarah - "coolest European ever"? I must be at least number 2! :-D But seriously, thanks for the plug, and don't worry - I never considered not coming back!

In any case, I'll try to be a little less trigger-happy from now on.

WHY
DGCI explores
why we blog.
I think I'd add another reason as to why I personally blog. It's because I have the same weakness as our President. Remember when Peggy Noonan wrote that article about why Bush is bad at interviews? She praised him for his scripted speeches but admits that he's bad at "talking points." I'm the same way. I blog because I'm horrible at extemporaneous debate. Someone like the conflicted Reservist or my co-worker catches me off guard and I stutter and grasp for an argument. It's one of the reasons I don't enjoy talking about politics in public: I never say things the way I want to and I always come away knowing I didn't represent my side very well. I spend hours every day reading the news, but when someone confronts me, I am absolutely horrible at defending my cause.
But blogging is sort of a "rough draft" for these moments. If I blog about something and get my thoughts in order, then when someone catches me off guard, perhaps I will remember my post on the subject and hopefully make a good showing. Cavalier X told me the other day that he's converted his officemates to the Right simply by discussing politics with them. I envy him, for this is simply not one of my talents. I hope that in time the blogging will help me improve on this weakness.
By the way, the conflicted Reservist will be joining me in my German class this term. Oh whoopie.

ELITE
A while back I wrote a
post about how bloggers are like gods to me but most people would star at you blankly if you said the name Glenn Reynolds. Tim pointed out to me today just how elite we bloggers are:
Between 2 and 7 percent of American adults blogging.
What the heck does everyone else do while blow drying their hair?

Interesting that most people who visit blogs are friends and family. None of my family (except Bogey) bothers with reading mine at all.

I bet those are for like personal blogs. Most people probably have blogs where they talk about more personal things like their day or their new baby or something other than politics and those are the ones that friends and family read. At least that's my guess.

The title of the article is misleading, since the percentage refers to adults *who are online*, which still isn't 100%. And the usual caveats about phone surveys apply. (I hang up when polled.)
Check out the *online* poll results:
http://ww1.usatoday.com/survey/response_question.asp?id=1873&qid=4129
74.1% (355 out of 479 respondents) who answered said that they blog. This is surely skewed because other blogs also linked to this story. 4.18% (20 out of 479 respondents) said "I'm blogging this."
Are bloggers an "elite" or just a "minority"? The former has connotations that the latter lacks.
One argument in favor of "elite" is the fact that Anglosphere bloggers on the whole can write in coherent, grammatical English. If it weren't for blogging, I would grossly underestimate the English abilities of Americans. When I see what *native speaker* university students are "writing" nowadays, I don't even want to wonder what the "writing" skills of people who *didn't* get into college are like ...
OT, but one advantage of MT is the ability to post long comments. No more HaloScan multi-parters!

Just left this comment at Two Nervous Dogs:
"I agree with you about the number seeming too high, and not just because it refers to the percentage of *adults online*, which is not all adults (I doubt most of my family is ever online - some don't even have computers). I think the number is inflated by people who have heard of blogging and want to pretend they're on the bandwagon even if they're not. People tell pollsters what they *think* pollsters want to hear, not what they actually think (or do!)."
Blogging is a great way to meet people(and to cause your ego to simultaneously swell and wilt!) but is it changing the world? Ignoring the "one person at a time" cliche, the only truthful answer is "no."

What is it about drying hair in front of the computer? I bought one of those jobs that fits over rollers and inflates with hot air. I have it plugged in the outlet closest to the computer and my morning is timed - get up at 0600, breakfast and hair drying at the computer from 0620 until 0700, then makeup and clothes. I read all my blogs in the morning.
I am apparently evolving into my mother. In spite of the fancy curling irons, hot rods and hot rollers, I am back to the same method she used to dry my hair when I was six years old! (It IS the most convenient, though.)

"I am apparently evolving into my mother."
Except for the blog-reading part, unless she read the newspaper in the morning. I've given up on newspapers now that I'm blog-addicted.
I don't foresee any new advances in hair-drying soon until a nanotech-based method comes out involving microscopic little buggers that "feed" on the moisture in your hair. Sorry if that's a bit gross-sounding, but that's the way I see things going.

IN A NUTSHELL
My name is Sarah, and I am a 31-yr-old military wife currently stationed where the kudzu is lovely and the soldiers wear the kind of beret you'd find in a secondhand store. My husband deployed to Iraq with the 1ID as an armor platoon leader in OIF II (2004-2005). He then made the interesting switch to his basic branch (Finance) and quickly decided that he wanted a more direct involvement in the War on Terror. He finished Civil Affairs training and a Farsi language course, after which he got deployed to...Iraq for OIF VI. Heh. The Army makes wonderful sense. He just returned in Jan 2009.
I have written a lot over the past two years about trying (unsuccessfully) to have a baby. We got pregnant with our first child last year but had a miscarriage in December. Our hope was to get pregnant again before my husband deployed. Happily, I found out I was pregnant four days after he left for Iraq. Sadly, we lost that baby too.
I'm also an avid knitter -- see my knitting archive -- and I belong to a group that makes and donates preemie caps to the local hospital. Here are a few of my favorites.
I wrote a few posts in my early blogging years that explain who I am. I'm a military wife but I secretly wish I were in the Army (Something I Can Relate To and Still Thinking). I support the War on Terror (Pacing). I lean to the right politically, which is something I came to on my own (D'Souza and Nature or Nurture?) and which I hid from my friends for a long time (A Long Time Coming). I have lived in both France and Sweden before, and we just got back from living in Germany for three years, but I'm a diehard American through and through (Freedom, American and Homelandsick). I also constantly have to keep myself on track and remind myself of what's important, which I refer to as the laser beam (Anger).
Thank you for checking out my blog. The only thing I ask is that if you disagree with me, do so in a polite way (Manners).

And you, for doing yours.

What is GROKKING? Thanks!

grok
To grok (pronounced GRAHK) something is to understand something so well that it is fully absorbed into oneself. In Robert Heinlein's science-fiction novel of 1961, Stranger in a Strange Land, the word is Martian and literally means "to drink" but metaphorically means "to take it all in," to understand fully, or to "be at one with." Today, grok sometimes is used to include acceptance as well as comprehension - to "dig" or appreciate as well as to know.

Hey there.
Tim Fitzgerald sent me your way. Not able to drop by daily but wanted to say hello. He seems to think we would hit it off well! We were neighbors in Giessen.
I have attempted a blog as well but it is WAY behind because we pcsd back to the States in Dec and hubby was redeployed to the sandbox with 2/11 ACR.
Blessings!
