THE SO-CALLED PRINCIPLES OF THE UN
Just when we all thought the UN couldn't get any more disgusting. Go see some
lauded entries from the UN political cartoon contest, entries that were "chosen for their ability to enhance, explain and even help direct the spirit and principles of the U.N." And then tear your hair out.

You should check out the Wikipedia entry on the Bush ranch in Crawford. Then compare and contrast what it says to the information about the newly built Edwards compound.

OK? At first glance, Crawford appears to be half as big and more eco-friendly. But what I really was linking to was the paragraphs at the end of Ham's post.

Apparently he missed the biggest and most obvious lessons to be learned from Iraq:
- The American people will not support a war based upon lies.
- An illegal, immoral and unjust war forces warriers to make compromises on morality. That is never a good thing for those with sound moral values. (For the others it doesn't matter.)
These are tough but important lessons that every soldier should take to heart.

I thought of something else for Varifranks to add to his clever analogy between Bosnia and Iraq: Bosnia was in a sectarian civil war that we didn't start. Iraq is in a sectarian civil war that we did start. Ooops.

Interesting. I saw "ken" post pretty much the same thing over at Blackfive.
Guess another L³ memetic surge is underway.

VFW
Walmart takes a lot of crap, so I thought this webpage where
the VFW thanks Walmart for their support was pretty cool.

In the place of open-air markets we now have big box supercenters. Mom and Pop have given way to the forced smiles of checkout clerks and supervisors in stiff suits. A few questions:
-What have we lost in trading authentic community for the rock bottom prices? What is a vibrant neighborhood worth?
-How is it that a company that generates $10.5 billion a year can't afford to pay for medical benefits or staff overtime?
-Why do the women working for Wal-Mart carry food tamps in their wallets?
I have to wonder if the cost to communities is actually good for our economy overall. There must be a system out there that is more interesting, dynamic and fulfilling.

I'm not going to pretend I read all of that nancy, but what I did read only raised one question in my mind - do you want your kids to be like sweatshop workers in mexico one day? Or do you want to continue to live in a first world country?
Okay, I guess that's kind of two questions.

Sarah,
I think I will cross post this to the link you have here. I am 70 now, I remember Pearl Harbor, I was a child but we all knew instantly we were at war. It is unreal to me to hear the newscasters and pundits on TV and radio who are so political about the war we are in.
Political power apparently means more to them than the lives of our soldiers and the Middle East people. I wish I could see a study, or had the energy and means to do it myself, to see what the correlation is between the escalation in the war deaths and the type of news reporting done here. I remember the posters of "loose lips sink ship." I went to the movies every Saturday and saw the newsreels, war newsreels; knew people who left for the service, saw the gold stars in the windows, and saw the train loads of service men go through town. We ALL knew who the enemy was, it wasn't a Democrat or Republican, it was THEM, Japan or Germany or Italy, or their allies. What has happened to education and our world that we don't know now who is the enemy?

"But the best happiness comes from the times of the most suffering. The Great Depression. World War II." -spoken like a true gen x-er.
Yeah, too bad there's not a clear cut enemy for you guys to go to glorious battle with anymore.

Thanks for the link. I actually thought of this when Saddam was done swinging and all the brouhaha started. It angers me to no end to see how we’ve become such delicate, PC wimps in this country that when the Butcher of Baghdad is finally sent to his maker and people are worried that it didn’t meet some standard. Who cares, good riddance a –hole.
Fred Barnes of the The Weekly Standard went off on Fox Sat. on the News Hour when the other guest were opining about the taunting at the hanging by the Shiites and the bad impression it conveyed to the Sunnis. He basically said, (paraphrasing) “So what! The Sunnis minority ran that country with an iron fist and brutalized the majority Shiites. Who cares if the Sunnis are offended, they are responsible for a lot of the insurgency and they need to be put down and squashed to end the bloodshed that is happening there everyday. Let them be offended.”

The media, including South Park, built old crazy Saddam into such a charicature and such a character that I couldn't help but feel a little sad while reading the newspaper about his death.

Like I said, "delicate, PC wimps".

Any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.
